This is Duke and Jack breaking loose a frozen down bobsled in Wisdom, Montana. Even though we parked the runners on fence posts, they were still frozen to the ground and hard to break loose in the morning. The experienced pullers were always excited to see if they could get the load moving each morning. I was good with a pitchfork after unloading three or four loads like this every day all winter.
I worked a while showing Percherons for Ponderay Ranch in Sandpoint, Idaho. Owner Dan Deshon had just finished restoring this old freight wagon and we took it to the fairgrounds for a test run. Riding shotgun beside me is my good friend and mentor, Jess Ross.
This is the bay team that inspired Snap and Cap in my book. They are Floyd and Duke, owned by Pete Messer of New London, New Hampshire. We are mowing some grass with a McCormick #9 high gear machine that I restored. They were very big boys weighing in at over 2,300 pounds apiece.
Mt. Kearsarge is in the background.
The Swanzy New Hampshire fire department owns this beautifully-restored, steam-powered pumper engine that I was honored to pull in the New Hampshire State Fireman's Parade in the early 1990s. The team is Tess and Dick, who were owned by Stonewall Farm in Keene, New Hampshire. I was so proud of Tess that day as it was her first trip to town and she was as steady as a rock. She was thrown in at the
Pictured are Duke and Ben plowing with an Oliver 23A 2-way sulky plow in New London, New Hampshire. I'm walking behind rather than riding because this field was very rocky and hadn't been plowed in ages. I was tired of being thrown off the seat when hanging up on a boulder. Ben was a three-year-old stallion and this was one of his first days in harness. Both horses were owned by a good friend, Pet
This nice little Belgian team are full sisters. Mitzy is three years old and Princess is four. They are mowing grass hay with a John Deere Big #4 with a six-foot bar that I had fully restored. The horses were owned by my dear friend, Peg Chase, in Keene, New Hampshire. Notice the yankee britchen harness. They were one of the fastest walking, hardest working teams I ever had the pleasure to drive.
